In most cases we use Arabic numbers, but the Roman numerals are also common in some applications. They can be seen on watches and clock faces, they can be found in books on prefaces and chapters, they can be seen in movies and at major events, but they are also used to name monarchs or to indicate the year on monuments and buildings. 

In this number system, which originated in ancient Rome, there are seven letters, each with a fixed integer value, which, when combined in different forms, produce new numbers. The Roman numerals consist of a combination of the letters I, V, X, L, C, D and M, whose symbols stand for 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 in the Hindu-Arabic number system. 

The position of the letters in relation to each other determines the value of the Roman numeral itself. 

These Roman numerals, which were the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe in the late Middle Ages, were later replaced by the already mentioned Hindu-Arabic number system.

If you regularly read my blog, you may remember that I love personalised items, whether it's a mug, a bracelet, or a necklace. Sometimes I prefer to have my nickname on it, sometimes I go for initials or stick to my last name. Somehow, I have always felt that they give something to a simple thing: a bit of personality, a bit of story.
Last year I had a pool on Twitter that asked if you liked monogrammed, personalised items, and it turned out that 85% of voters were up for them.
This year I asked if you were going to wear the name of your boyfriend/girlfriend on a necklace and it turned out that 42% of voters would do that and 58% would not.
